Testing 225/45 R17 summer tyres for 2016

  • Author: OPONEO.IE

When it comes to buying new summer tyres, safety is important. In this article, we will advise you on the best 225/45 R17 summer tyres to buy, based on the results of a test conducted by Germany’s GTÜ.

The GTU - the German Association for Technical Supervision - decided to test 14 tyre models, including both premium tyres and economy tyres from Asia. So, how do these tyres compare and which ones are the best option for you? Let’s find out.

The best summer tyres in the group

The overall winner was the Continental ContiSportContact 5. Because it gained the highest results, it is worth looking at this model in greater detail. With its asymmetric tread pattern, the tyre is clearly designed for the strongest passenger cars and SUVs. It offers excellent driving parameters in every situation, including dry roads, wet surfaces and while undergoing dynamic maneuvers.

This test is also not the only time the Continental ContiSportContact 5 has been rated highly, either. The same tyre - also in the 225/45 R17 tyre size - was tested by Auto Express magazine a year ago. It also came first. When testing the model, experts noted the tyre’s high performance when it came to braking, as well as wet and drip grip. The one downside identified during this process was the high rolling resistance, but tyres with sporting characteristics will never be too economic, although this was certainly taken into account during the design process.

Previously, the Continental ContiSportContact 5 earned the top position by Auto Motor und Sport, Auto Zeitung, Autobild and Autoreview magazines, the last of which was conducted in cooperation with the Pirelli tyre company. It also won tests conducted by ADAC and ACE/GTÜ.

Our own customers have also happily reviewed the tyre, giving it plenty of positive praise. As of February 29th, 2016, it has an overall score of 4.3 out of 5.

Other tyres worth recommending

Aside from the winner, it is also worth noting other models that also came in the upper bracket. All the tyres that came 1st to 7th (inclusively) can be regarded as recommended models.

Second place went to the Read about the best summer tyres for 2016 in the size 225/45R17. Check which of them have the best reviews and enjoy your journey.. While it was considered something of a novelty this year, this tyre nonetheless builds on the success of its predecessor, which continues to gain awards.

The next two tyres actually earned third place equally, so the position is shared between the Dunlop SportMaxx RT2 and the Pirelli P Zero. These were followed by the Falken FK510, Nokian zLine and Bridgestone Turanza T001. All of these tyres offered a balanced performance and can be recommended to any driver.

Outside of this bracket, it is also advisable to consider the Michelin Primacy 3, which came eight. This tyre is worthy of note because it absolutely smashed the competition (including the top 7 tyres) when it came to its performance on dry surfaces. However, it fared much worse on wet roads, which is why it did not earn a higher position. Still, this shows that tyre manufacturing is always a balancing act between various ideals and the best tyre designs are always a compromise in terms of performance.

Good summer tyres must offer safety on dry and wet surface (Source: Kröner/GTÜ).

How were the tyres tested?

GTÜ primarily focused on performance issues relating to safety on both dry and wet surfaces. Aside from this priority, the organisation also assessed the tyres’ rolling resistance and driving comfort, although these accounted for a small portion of the overall score.

Interestingly, the tested tyres were also compared to tyres of the same model purchased at random on the market. This was done to ensure the tyres being tested reflected the standard properties of the model available to buy.

How to choose summer tyres?

Many drivers find choosing tyres troublesome. Thankfully, there are sources of information that make this process easier. Apart from tests, such as the comparison of summer tyres in 225/45 R17 discussed here, there are also driver opinions and tyre labels.

The EU tyre label shows information about the braking distance on wet surfaces, rolling resistance and external noise level, offering quick and easy comparison of these factors across different tyres.

User opinions and reviews, similarly, are a great source of information. We have over 100,000 opinions in our portal, so you can easily find answers to your questions.

However, if you don’t have the time to check all of these sources or want additional, expert verification, you can call 0800 066 3422 and speak to our experts. We will help find the ideal tyre model for you.
