Testing 195/65 R15 economy summer tyres for 2016

  • Author: OPONEO.IE

When it comes to choosing tyres, price is a very important factor. Many drivers often choose the cheapest models available, but can you choose a cheap tyre that is also safe? We’ve compiled test results of various summer economy tyres to show these possibilities.
ACE and ARBÖ motoring clubs tested 10 different tyre models in the popular 195/65 R15 tyre size. Four of these were rated as “particularly recommended”, five were nominated as “recommended” and one was rated as a “conditionally recommended” tyre. All of these models were tested in a “V” speed index (speeds up to 149 miles per hour) on a Volkswagen Golf.

This tyre size is very sought after by drivers, as 195/65 R15 summer tyres are fitted on to popular models such as the Volkswagen Golf, Passat, Vauxhall Astra, Kia Cee’d, Skoda Octavia, Renault Megane and more. As you can see, it is a common size for the compact car range.

Fist place in the test

The highest overall score want to the N’Blue HD Plus by the Korean Nexen company. It received a “particularly recommended” rated after it proved to have excellent performance on both wet and dry surfaces. The test showed that this tyre is not just cheap - it’s also safe. Of all the tyres tested, the N’Blue HD Plus showed the shortest wet braking distance.

This tyre has been available on the market for a number of years now. As such, it already has a number of reviews from Oponeo customers in our portal. Combined together, they give the tyre an average score of 4.1 out of 5, which is fantastic. Furthermore, 100% of the drivers would strongly recommend this tyre to others!

Other positions

Aside from Nexen’s N’Blue HD Plus, 3 other economy summer tyres were awarded the “particularly recommended” rating. These tyres are:

Of these, the Hankook Kinergy Eco K425 was the only medium class tyre to be involved in the test - this is because its pricing puts it more in line with lower class models, warranting its inclusion. Similarly to the test winner, the Hankook Kinergy Eco K425 demonstrated a very good performance on both wet and dry surfaces. The tyre only scored a few points less than the Nexen N’Blue HD Plus.

Likewise, the Pneumant Summer HP4 also performed well on both tyres of summer surfaces. The list “of particularly recommended” tyres is rounded off with the Polish Dębica Presto. Like the others, this tyre displayed a strong performance on and wet and dry surfaces. Interestingly, the Dębica Presto has more than 1,000 user reviews in our portal, with a rating of 4.1 out of 5, while 98% of users said they would strongly recommend it to their friends and family.

The “recommended” bracket is led by the Barum Brillantis 2, which came 5th in the overall rankings. Despite worse on-road properties in comparison to the test’s overall winner, the tyre fully deserved its “recommended” rating, just like the four tyres awarded the same title. These tyres are:

Sadly, the last model tested - the GT Radial Champiro FE1 - only deserved a “conditionally recommended” rating. This is because the experts responsible for the test were concerned by the tyre’s wet performance. It’s braking distance in these conditions was 15 meters longer than the winner’s.

Do You Know How To Choose Appropriate Tyres?

This test is a valuable source of information about medium and economy class tyres, because products of this price range are rarely included in professional tyre tests conducted by motoring organisations and magazines.

You should remember, however, that such tests are not the only source of information. Driver opinions, for example, are very important as they offer experiences of everyday driving on specific tyres, helping to learn more about the product’s ongoing behaviour. These reviews also provides honest accounts of the tyres in various road conditions, such as you would encounter in reality.

Of course, it’s best to start choosing your tyres by reading the tyre profile descriptions. This will inform you about the technologies used, possible tyre sizes, the biggest advantages and the overall structure of the tyre. Reading EU tyre labels is also another important step towards choosing the best tyres. These offer objective data on 3 parameters: noise, wet grip and fuel efficiency.

On the other hand, if you do not wish to go through these processes, you can call the Oponeo hotline on 076 604 27 03 and speak to an expert. Our advisers will happily help choose the ideal tyre model for you.
