The first number informs about the tread width of the tyre and it is provided in millimetres. In the case of the 205/50 R17 tyres it equals 205 mm. The second number equals the percentage ratio of the tyre's profile height to its tread width. Next in line is the letter "R" which denotes the tyre's radial construction.
