The SEAT Ibiza is a B-segment passenger car that has been a staple in the automotive market since its debut in 1984. Initially available only as a hatchback for its first three generations, the model later expanded to include additional body styles such as saloon, coupé, and estate, marketed under the names SEAT Córdoba, Córdoba SX, and Córdoba Vario, respectively.
The first-generation Ibiza was based on the SEAT Ronda and marked a significant milestone as the first SEAT model not to use Fiat body components. Its design was crafted by renowned Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, while the powertrains were developed in collaboration with Porsche. In 1991, the model received a facelift and was rebranded as the SEAT Ibiza New Line. Interestingly, this generation was also produced in China under a different name. In 1999, Nanjing Automobile Group acquired the production license and launched the model as the Nanjing Yuejin Soyat.
The second generation, known as the SEAT Ibiza 6K, was introduced in 1993 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Built on the Volkswagen A03 platform—also used in the VW Polo 6N—this version brought improved engineering and design. A facelift followed less than three years later, enhancing the hatchback’s aesthetics and engine performance. In 2002, the third generation, the SEAT Ibiza 6K GP01, entered production.
In 2008, the fourth-generation SEAT Ibiza made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show, initially presented as the Bocanegra concept. Designed by Luc Donckerwolke, this version introduced several key updates, including a new estate variant—the Ibiza ST—with a generous 430-litre boot capacity. The model range featured a wide selection of efficient TSI and TDI engines. The high-performance Ibiza Cupra variant came equipped with a 1.4 TSI engine delivering 180 hp, twin-turbocharged and paired with a 7-speed DSG gearbox.
To date, over 5 million SEAT Ibiza units have been sold worldwide, solidifying its position as one of the brand’s most successful models.
